The film Great Expectations Essay Example For Students

The film Great Expectations Essay The film Great Expectations has a more interesting beginning and has more effect on the reader, than the opening chapter in the novel. The film starts by Mr. Pirrip (Pip as an older gentleman) reading to us the first few lines of the novel. You can only see his hands on the book, when it fades out and re-opens into the story with the camera panning on and around a young Pip. He is running across a bleak, desolate moor with an old wooden gibbet in the background. It is quiet dark and miserable, which also adds to the tense atmosphere. It shows you a tree creaking which looks like a giant hand, which again also adds to the eerie atmosphere. The graves are untidy, crooked and very disorganized. Pip is standing by his parents grave (but not the ones of his five small brothers which strangely dont appear in the film) weeping when Magwitch (the convict) comes from nowhere and shouts, Hold your noise. Keep still you little devil, or Ill cut your throat! Pip replies quickly and begs for the convict not to. The convict is wearing brownish grey rags and a band around his shaven head. He has no shoes, is very dirty and has a ball and chain around his legs. He didnt seem to play the part very well and I think he talked much too posh for a convict as did Pip for a young boy. Their speech wasnt very enthusiastic either and there facial expressions were very wooden. In my opinion the convict could have looked more intimidating. In the novel Charles Dickens describes the convict in great detail to try and convince us that he looks and sounds very menacing. I personally like the way Dickens describes Magwitch and what way each incident has happened to him. He says: A man who had been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped and shivered and glared and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his head

Martha Stewart and Inside Trading Act essays

Martha Stewart and Inside Trading Act essays According to Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, insider trading is any manipulative or deceptive device in connection with the purchase or sale of any security." This ruling served as a deterrent for the early part of this century before the stock market became such a vital part of our lives. But as the 1960's arrived and illegal insider activity began to pick up, courts were confused by this vague definition. So judicial members were forced to interpret this idea since Congress never gave a concrete definition. As a result, two theories of insider trading liability have evolved over the past three decades through judicial and administrative interpretation: the classical theory and the misappropriation theory. The classical theory is the type of illegal activity one usually thinks of when the words "insider trading" are mentioned. The theory emerged from the 1961 SEC administrative case of Cady Roberts. This was the SEC's first attempt to regulate securities trading by corporate insiders. The ruling paved the way for the traditional way we define insider trading - "trading of a firm's stock or derivatives assets by its officers, directors and other key employees on the basis of information not available to the public." The Supreme Court officially recognized the classical theory in the 1980 case U.S. v. Chiarella. U.S. v. Chiarella was the first criminal case of insider trading. Vincent Chiarella was a printer who put together the coded packets used by companies preparing to launch a large money offer for other firms. Chiarella broke the code and bought shares of the target companies based on his knowledge of the takeover bid. He was eventually caught, and his case clarified the terms of what has come to be known as the classical theory of insider trading. However, the Supreme Court reversed his conviction on the grounds that the existing insider trading law only applied t ...

Bluest Eye and Giovannis Room

The blue eyes and Giovanni's room have two novels written by James Baldwin and Tony Morrison, the world's most highly respected 20th century literary writers. But I'd like to concentrate on their two pieces, James Baldwin's Giovanni's room and Tony Morrison's blues eye. Among these novels, the author suggests a theme rooted in some way in the present. These authors now show this in different ways. This is due to the contrast between the outline of their stories and the structure of novels. Room of Giovanni James Baldwin's novel Giovanni's Room is aimed at emphasizing the symbolism of Giovanni's room. In the novel, the room of Giovanni is depicted as a Giovanni prison symbolizing the life of Giovanni, dominating the relationship between Giovanni and David, a metaphor of David's homosexuality and underwater tomb. These different depictions of Giovanni's rooms are combined in novels to create an overall negative metaphor for homosexuality that follows from society. In the novel The Blue st Eyes, Tony Morrison combines techniques such as how to use the metaphor, satirical usage of the name, and the visual image she uses. The theme of blue eyes is developing mainly on consistency of African Americans against white standards. Women can make their skin white and adjust their hair by changing their hair, but you can not change the color of their eyes. The desire to change his / her identity is itself a desire to become a depressed eye, a desire to become an indication of instability of Pecora itself. This work was somewhat overlooked before other Morrison novels began to form a series of works, but most of the comments on the most eyes are beneficial. Later, many critics saw the blue eyes as a background for Morrison's quest for racial, sexual and cultural problems. For example, Slara, the central figure of Morrison's second novel, is not constrained by social norms that are not of type, but Jade of Tar Baby's fashion model rejects myths of romance . . Morrison women ar e increasingly looking for freedom and autonomy. Like Claudia MacTeer in The Bluest Eyes, they reject romantic myths, beautiful myths, and the implicit character. But the blue eyes is not only the foundation of Morrison's late novels. It is worth reading for himself.

Is the Good News about Compliance Goods News about International Law Essay

Is the Good News about Compliance Goods News about International Law - Essay Example In the case of the Guatemala and Belize, they agreed to appear before the International Court of Justice with a condition of passing a referendum on a question by October. The Court was therefore unable to convince the members of the states to decide disagreements which failed on the prosecution. This case reveals to us that the stability of the International law to handle problems faced by its members at the moment with regards to the formation of a stable coalition to prosecute such issues becomes questionable. The main contentious issue in this scenario is the conflict of interest between the member states and the jury. The leadership systems of many states especially the developing states are partial to their interests and would not like being exposed for the determination of justice. Conversely, the law is concerned with ensuring that all the provisions are met and that the judgments are made based on the facts rather than notions fostered by fallacies. A clear reflection on these issues has great effect on the decisions made by different countries. This is evident in the way the Guatemala’s did not make decisions when it came to October 2013 as agreed in the ICJ. They feared to be removed from office for being the first administration to seal acknowledgements with the Belize. Thus Guatemala acted in their favor due to the repercussions they would face after running the referendum. These early choices have great influence on countries’ subsequent decisions to comply with international treaties and decisions from legal institutions. The enforcement mechanisms of the international law takes both positive and negative forms. The positive mechanisms incorporate incentives or promises that might be in monetary forms so as to encourage compliance. There is transparency whereby there is gathering and sharing of useful information concerning the fact of issue at the basic level. The second mechanism is bureaucracy which, according to Chayes and Chayes

Reason for Pursuing Graduation degree in Heath care Administration Essay Example for Free

Reason for Pursuing Graduation degree in Heath care Administration Essay Each individual has his own reason for pursuing a graduate degree. Professionally, a graduate degree shows that the person has the motivation, ambition, and dedication to improve and thus strive to obtain a position in which s/he can apply and expand his/her knowledge base. The choice to seek additional education after investing four years in an undergraduate degree shows commitment to learning and recognition of self-worth. I chose to pursue a Master’s degree because; I believe that obtaining a graduate degree will definitely make me more marketable in the corporate world. But my main goal is to broaden my horizon beyond the technical world, unlock career aspirations otherwise blocked, and enhance problem-solving and decision-making skills which lead me to do some excellent research base work in future. I am writing this statement in support of my application to study towards the Master of Health Care Administration degree at Worcester State University (WSU). Here the question is why am I pursuing my graduate degree in HCA/Public Health while I did my graduation/ under graduation from Statistics? My answer is, I want to expand my career level in a broad way by opening some more windows and I believe, the public health will be a good choice for one of them. A Healthcare Administration Degree can be utilized in just about any healthcare related occupation, ranging from hospital CEO, to health insurance manager(who need experience of statistics), to public health official(need statistics), to management consultant, health care analysis(need statistics) and more. Getting this degree under my belt now will ensure that I have a plethora of career options later on. I think health care and statistics are just like cousins. In todays world we are faced with situations everyday where statistics can be applied. Statistics can be used to determine the potential outcome of thousands of things where the human mind alone wouldnt be able to. For example- Researchers employ scientific methods to gather data on human population  samples. The health care industry benefits from knowing consumer market characteristics such as age, sex, race, income and disabilities. These demographic statistics can predict the types of services that people are using and the level of care that is affordable to them. Health care administrators refer statistics on service utilization to apply for grant funding and to justify budget expenditures to their governing boards. Quantitative research guides health care decision makers with statisticsnumerical data collected from measurements or observation that describe the characteristics of specific population samples. Descriptive statistics summarize the utility, efficacy and costs of medical goods and services. Increasingly, health care organizations employ statistical analysis to measure their performance outcomes. Hospitals and other large provider service organizations implement data-driven, continuous quality improvement programs to maximize efficiency. Government health and human service agencies gauge the overall health and well-being of populations with statistical information. Moreover, Public Service Leaders work behind the scenes at hospitals and other healthcare facilities to make sure that patients have access to quality health services. They are trained to manage the financial aspects of hospital administration which include creating and managing budgets, conducting financial forecasting exercises to project future growth and expenditures and overseeing the day to day tracking of accounting data. Some of these healthcare business professionals are involved in public service but at a more strategic level as they work to guide policy making decisions for both government agencies and private healthcare service providers. Students pursuing graduate degrees in Healthcare Administration usually are interested in promoting quality healthcare to everyone not only from inside the hospital base as doctor but from the outside in different necessary way. A graduate level Health Administration degree programs are usually filled with courses pertaining to quantitative analysis, probability and statistics and hypotheses testing. So, I believe Students who have interests in learning how to correctly design research studies, applying statistical models using the latest healthcare software tools and interpreting data to contribute to improve healthcare services do well in graduate level health administration coursework.

Fashion Essay :: essays research papers

It is quite evident as you walk around the streets of almost any city or town in America that the line between what was once considered the black style of dress and the white styles has become less and less evident. This is especially true with the younger kids in junior high and high school. The baggy pants and shirts with labels and bright colors that were once reserved for the inner city black and Latino kids, are now being worn by whites in wealthy suburban neighborhoods.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I lived in a wealthy upper middle class area outside of Nashville Tennessee for most of my life and over the past five to ten years the change in style of dress for suburban kids has become more and more evident. Main stream stores such as Dillard’s and Castner Knot’s started carrying the underground hip-hop clothes that were once only found in the larger cities. Even major labels such as Tommy Hillfigger started designing larger clothes with brighter colors. There jeans were available in relaxed fit and even baggy. Hip Hop had now become a large market for young teenagers and people in their early twenties. I went to a private school with a very strict dress code and even there you could tell that the new urban fashion was having an effect on the way some students dressed. They would try to get baggier pants and would wear bright colored shirts with logos on the front. At ballgames they would wear baggy blue jeans and sweatshirts with â€Å"Polo† or â€Å"Nautica† emblems on the front. Whenever we had a casual day all the kids would go to the mall and you would see the baggy jeans and bright shirts on everyone. When the weather got colder kids at school started wearing the bomber ski jackets, so many people at my school had them that the school maid them illegal to wear. Also more and more guys started wearing the large hiking boots that were to bulky for their khaki pants, so they had to cut them at the bottom to fit around the boots.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   I don’t know exactly how these trends came about but I remember it started when I was in seventh or eighth grade. At first it was the large â€Å"Starter† jackets with The Raiders or Miami Dolphins logos on them, and then it went to overalls and Adidas shoes and jackets.
